The goal of this course is to increase skills related to English/Language Arts. We aim to increase reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary in this class. My personal goal is to meet students where they currently are academically, and help them to grow and find success as they increase their reading and language skills. I hope also to help them find books they enjoy and help them to become life-long readers and learners.

HomeworkWe read each day in class for 10 minutes. Students keep a log of their reading on a google doc. Each day when they come to class, they record the page they are currently on in their books. Mondays we set reading goals individually on the books they select. Their reading goal is due the following Monday. Students are expected to read at home for 20 minutes each night so they are able to reach their reading goal for the week.

Literature and Nonfiction ReadingWe will be reading a variety of literature during the school year, as well as working on reading and comprehension with several types of nonfiction text. We read out of our literature text, novels, and nonfiction articles from a variety of sources.

Spelling/VocabularyRather than the traditional spelling where students are required to spell words from word families (example: words with -tion, action, location, vacation, etc.), we are learning word roots and Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes that can be generalized to more words. This blends in well with what the high school does and what independent learners do when they read text.
